What does it mean to be body positive? Having body positivity refers to a belief that everyone deserves a positive body image of themselves, regardless of societal expectations of body shape and appearance. This assertion has particularly grown in recent years, matching the increased pressures on people to meet certain body image expectations placed on them by pop culture, and most notoriously, social media. In fact, a peer-reviewed study in 2023 called body image concerns a “global burden” and that “interventions to mitigate these concerns are warranted.” So, what actions can we take as individuals to be body positive? How should we perceive our bodies and what can a new perception do for our mental health?
Body Positivity’s Impact on Mental Health
As we delve into the impact body image can have on our mental health, it’s important to remember that body positivity doesn’t just apply to weight, height, dress and other concerns tied directly to appearance. Unfair judgements are sometimes made based on a disability as well. According to the Body Project at Bradley University, researchers found many disabled men and women would suffer from people making incorrect assumptions, causing them to internalize these perceptions and avoid seeking out meaningful relationships. Similar, unfair judgements can be made on account of race, sexuality and gender.
It’s clear a positive body image can significantly impact mental well-being, and conversely, mental health can affect how we perceive our bodies. This connection can be beneficial in a number of ways, including:
- Self-Esteem: Positive body image boosts self-esteem and overall confidence, reducing feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.
- Reducing Stress and Anxiety: Negative body image can contribute to stress and anxiety, affecting mental health by creating constant self-criticism and pressure to conform to unrealistic standards.
- Depression: Persistent negative body image can be linked to depression, as it often involves feelings of shame, guilt and low self-worth.
How to be Body Positive
So, how do we lead a body-positive lifestyle? Talking about philosophy is one thing, but how do we change our perception and put this into practice? Falling in love with your body and yourself involves a combination of self-compassion, positive thinking and practical steps.
Here are 10 tips to guide you:
- Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend. Recognize that everyone has imperfections and that your worth is not defined by your appearance.
- Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you catch yourself thinking negatively about your body, challenge those thoughts. Replace them with affirmations about your strengths and positive attributes.
- Focus on Functionality: Appreciate what your body can do rather than just how it looks. Celebrate your body’s abilities, whether it’s running, dancing or simply supporting you through daily activities.
- Surround Yourself with Positivity: Engage with media and people who promote body positivity. Follow accounts and read content that uplift and affirm diverse body types.
- Set Realistic Goals: Avoid comparing yourself to unrealistic standards or trying to achieve unattainable ideals. Focus on setting healthy and achievable goals for yourself.
- Practice Mindfulness and Self-Care: Engage in activities that help you feel grounded and connected to your body. This includes as yoga, meditation or simply spending time doing things you enjoy.
- Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Good: Choose clothing that fits well and makes you feel confident. When you dress in a way that feels authentic to you, it can improve how you feel about your body.
- Seek Professional Support: If negative body image or self-esteem issues are impacting your mental health, consider talking to a therapist or counselor who specializes in body image and self-acceptance.
- Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Each positive step is a victory in learning to love and accept yourself.
- Connect with Others: Share your journey with supportive friends or communities that encourage body positivity. Connection and support can be powerful in changing your mindset.
Remember, developing a positive body image is a journey that takes time and effort. Every step forward is a step toward greater self-acceptance and well-being.
